The Science Behind Molecular Hydrogen in Kangen Water

Molecular hydrogen (H₂) can be present in freshly electrolyzed water. In a Kangen machine, it is a measurable water property created during electrolysis, not a medical treatment or health outcome.

What is Molecular Hydrogen?

Molecular hydrogen consists of two bonded hydrogen atoms (H₂). In water-ionizer discussions, the useful questions are how it is produced, how it is measured, and how quickly it dissipates:

  • It is produced during electrolysis
  • It dissolves into the freshly made water
  • Its concentration can vary by source water and setting
  • It dissipates over time, especially with storage and agitation

How It Works: A Water Property

A Kangen machine filters incoming water and passes it through an electrolysis chamber. The resulting drinking water may contain dissolved molecular hydrogen. Its presence is not a claim that the water treats, prevents, or changes any health condition.

What the Machine Produces

1. Dissolved Molecular Hydrogen

Freshly produced drinking water can contain dissolved molecular hydrogen. It is a physical characteristic of the water and is not presented as an antioxidant benefit to the body.

2. Negative ORP

Oxidation-reduction potential, or ORP, is measured in millivolts. A negative ORP is a water property that may be observed in freshly electrolyzed drinking water.

3. pH Settings

A Kangen machine can produce drinking-water settings of pH 8.5 to 9.5, along with neutral, mildly acidic, high-alkaline, and strong-acidic settings for distinct practical uses.

4. Filtration and Electrolysis

The internal filter treats incoming water before it reaches the electrolysis chamber. Eight platinum-dipped titanium plates in the K8 are part of the process that separates the water streams.

How Kangen Water Produces H₂

The electrolysis process in Kangen Water machines splits water molecules (H₂O) and produces hydrogen-rich water:

  1. Water flows through platinum-dipped titanium plates
  2. Electrical current separates H₂O into H₂ and O
  3. Hydrogen gas dissolves into the water
  4. Result: Water rich in molecular hydrogen

Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP)

Freshly made Kangen Water may show a negative ORP, often discussed in a range such as -200 to -400 mV. ORP is a property of the water, not a health claim:

  • Tap Water: can vary by municipal source and treatment
  • Bottled Water: can vary by brand, storage, and source
  • Kangen Water: may show a negative ORP when freshly produced

The machine's water settings are designed for:
